Who decides if you are a man or a woman. Clearly many people will say, the doctor that brought you into this world. He looked at your genitals and proudly called you a boy or a girl. Well unless these doctors have a way of looking at the different factors and combinations there are in the chromosomal/genetic make up, they are then just taking a wild guess. You are scratching your head and thinking what does he mean. If you have a penis you are a boy and if you have a vagina you are a girl. Well, yes in the elementary sense of things, or in a typical development this statement holds true. But what about the 65,000 children who are born a year with out the clear cut signs or the typical development? They have a collage of chromosomal inconsistency, combinations, insensitive or none responsive receptors that throw off the typical pathway of gender and sex congruence. In this equation we are also looking at sexual preference which are also genetic in nature. Although many extremists may argue, the cascade of events that take place in early development are responsible for gender identity and sexual preference. So then, who is to say if two men want to get married, that one of these men actually has an xxy combination in his chromosomal make up, which then would make him part female. So then is it really a same sex marriage? That same argument can be turned around and said, what if a heterosexual couple had a chromosomal mix up that actually made one of them into the same sex. We never really test our chromosome so we can't really know, can we? So I say, stop the black and white definition that makes up a man or a woman, since we can't really see or know if one is actually a man or a woman.

Science has advanced dramatically to be stuck in primitive times and with such close minds. Live and let live, worry about more important things in life, like our planet.

Does having a Y chromosome make someone a man?

A lot of unintended harm happens when people assume a Y chromosome makes a person a boy or a man and the lack of a Y chromosome makes a person a girl or a woman. For example, one physician educator on our Medical Advisory Board had the challenging experience of trying to calm a 23-year-old patient who had just been told by a resident that she was "really a man" because the resident had diagnosed the patient as having a Y chromosome and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
It is true that in typical male development, the SRY gene on the tip of the Y chromosome helps to send the embryo down the masculine pathway. But more than the SRY is needed for sex determination and differentiation; for example, women with CAIS have the SRY gene but lack androgen receptors. In terms of hormone effects on their bodies (including their brains), women with CAIS have had much less "masculinization" than the average 46,XX woman because their cells do not respond to androgens.
Moreover, the SRY gene can be translocated onto an X chromosome (so that a 46,XX person may develop along a typical masculine pathway), and there are dozens of genes on chromosomes other than the X and the Y that contribute to sexual differentiation. And beyond the genes, a person’s sex development can be significantly influenced by environmental factors (including the maternal uterine environment in which the fetus developed).
So it is simply incorrect to think that you can tell a person’s sex just looking at whether he or she has a Y chromosome.

SRY, discovered in 1989, is a small gene located at the tip of the short arm of the Y chromosome. So what does it do? Actually, like all genes, it does nothing except to act as a blueprint for a protein. In this case, the protein of the same name does funky things to DNA, like bending it and unwinding the 2 strands, so that other proteins can get in and attach themselves to other genes that are then turned on. So how did this gene get its reputation (and its name) as the "sex determining" gene?
As is pretty common in the world of genetics, this was because of some errant mice. Researchers in England took a laboratory-made copy of this gene and inserted it artificially into a female (XX) mouse embryo at a very early stage of development. The mouse was "converted" from female to male, so the gene must have been responsible – right? Well, maybe not. A few years later, a similar gene was found on human chromosome 17. When the important part of this gene was inserted into a female mouse embryo, the same thing happened. Voila! A male.
So now we have 2 genes that can turn a female into a male, and one of them is not located on the Y chromosome! How can that be? It turns out that SRY is probably just a facilitator that allows a more critical gene (or genes) to function, by blocking the action of another opposing factor. Can the magic of genetics do the opposite – turn a male into a female? Indeed it can. A gene on the X chromosome (the chromosome one typically associates with "femaleness") called DAX1 when present in double copy in a male (XY) mouse, turns it into a female.
So now we have genes on the Y that can turn females with XX chromosomes into males and genes on the X that can turn males with XY chromosomes into females… wow! Maleness and femaleness are NOT determined by having an X or a Y, since switching a couple of genes around can turn things upside down. In fact, there’s a whole lot more to maleness and femaleness than X or Y chromosomes. About 1 in 20,000 men has no Y chromosome, instead having 2 Xs. This means that in the United States there are about 7,500 men without a Y chromosome. The equivalent situation - females who have XY instead of XX chromosomes - can occur for a variety of reasons and overall is similar in frequency.
For these 15,000 or more individuals in the US (and who knows how many worldwide), their chromosomes are irrelevant. It is the total complement of their genes along with their life experiences (physical, mental, social) that makes them who they are (or any of us, for that matter). The last time I counted, there were at least 30 genes that have been found to have important roles in the development of sex in either humans or mice. Of these 30 or so genes 3 are located on the X chromosome, 1 on the Y chromosome and the rest are on other chromosomes, called autosomes (on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 19).
In light of this, sex should be considered not a product of our chromosomes, but rather, a product of our total genetic makeup, and of the functions of these genes during development.

TRANS FEELINGS

How it feels to be a Transsexual:

Going back in time, my first recollection of not fitting into the perfect little mold was around 3 years of age. My memories are tormenting, they will forever haunt me. As a child, you can’t understand why those that claim to love you, are constantly trying to change you. For some reason they believe they know what's best for you. Forgetting, that although a child is young and naive, they still have a sense of self and need to express it. I was never into the girlie thing. My mannerisms were masculine, and my play reflected that. But quickly my mother made sure she was going to break my spirit and force me to be someone I was not. The word Transsexual was not part of my vocabulary or thought process, but I knew from an early age, that I was different from the rest. I Felt isolated, estranged and felt an overall sadness, due to the constant reprimanding I received on a daily basis. I could not do anything right, and the sad thing was, I didn’t understand why. I was just being me. Imagine growing up your entire life with people constantly telling you that something is wrong with you. That you do not act the way you are suppose to. What kind of crap is that? I was only doing what my brain dictated. Reflexive in nature, without a thought process, I was expressing my true self. This torment followed me throughout my life and because society dictates what they feel gender should be. This leads to live in a world of gender expectations. I know how I felt then, and how I feel in my heart now. I am not mentally insane nor do I have a mental disorder. I am a highly functioning human being, who graduated with honors, owns his own business, and is happily married. Far from being a deranged psycho with a sexual deviant problem. I am a by product of nature, the only thing wrong with my brain is that it’s none congruent with my physical sex. This is a biological mishap that presented itself due to medication taken by my mother in order to get pregnant. I have worked through my anger, and have no one to blame, I have made peace with my parents, and the world in general. My mission is to educate and have people realize once and for all that gender lies not in your genitals, but in your brain.
How it happens:
There is a series of events that take place prior to the fetus developing into a boy or a girl. It’s a matter of fact we are neutral until we reach 8 weeks gestation. The message given from the chromosome to the gene, who is responsible for the hormonal influx, is what decides if you will have a penis or a vagina. There are many factors that can construe this. The brain is the first to receive the signals which hard wires itself to be a boy or girl brain. The intrinsic developmental pathway will continue down south, communicating with the receptors that are responsible to create the gonads, reproductive organs and finally the genitals. In a typical situation the brain and physical sex are congruent, in a atypical situation the brain develops one way and the physical sex into another. The combination of permutation are endless, in fact, over 65,000 children are born a year, that do not fit the perfect Adam and Eve mold. As much as we do not want to believe this, the scientific evidence is there. The fact that a child can be born with both genitals, one of each reproductive organ, or a none congruent system is real. So what does that mean? How do we label this child? What does that do to our perfect little box syndrome that we so desire? We are a society that seeks labels, and cannot accept individuals for who they are. The need to change us or even save us, is deeply coded into our DNA. Well, you cannot change what nature created, and cannot save what does not need saving. Accept that nature does not follow a recipe or mold, that things get altered along the way. Medication, environmental toxins such as endocrine disrupting chemicals, or just plain stress that the pregnant mother was exposed to, can create a disruption in the typical pathway. XX does not always yield a girl or for that matter XY does not always produce a boy. We should know better by now that mother nature is complex, and we can’t claim to have her figured out. The variance of Transsexuality is growing, we need to learn to understand and be tolerant.
History of Transsexuality:
We are talked about in the Bible. Known once as the pride of the tribe. Not thought of as mentally insane individuals, but instead considered Kin of God, Magic Incarnates and healers. We were known as teachers, great lovers, problem solvers, and our advice was cherished by Kings and Queens of great nations. Possessing the balance of masculinity and femininity and called two spirited. Ever since organize religion has influenced our views and belief system, Transsexuals are discriminated against, ridiculed, murdered, and prosecuted for being true to ourselves. Often being misunderstood, all due to lack of knowledge and compassion from the world around us. We are not a threat to anyone, instead the world has much to learn from us. That is to learn the true essence of self, the secrets and the intrinsic of gender, and to battle the struggles we face to understand each others differences.

Conclusion:
We are not a freak show or a sexual fantasy. We are human beings with feelings. We have been around since the beginning of time, and we will continue to be in the future. There is a wide spectrum and continuum that defines us, no two Transsexuals are alike. That is because mother nature does not follow a recipe book. She creates as an artist’s creates, and we were made for a reason. To question it, would be to defied the greater plan that she has made for us.

So you have heard the term before, or maybe you have seen a drag queen perform in the past, you know, the one's in "those" night clubs. Or maybe you once had an uncle who use to like to wear female clothing. But do you really know what transsexuality is all about, or are you like most people that are quick to judge and just call us freaks? You confuse the term with one's own sexual preference. Hey the word sex is in the term, so it must be some sexual perversion, right? The term means transitioning from one sex to another, or better yet changing your sex to match your gender. Gender is not the same thing as sex. Gender refers to your identity, your personality, the essence of you. Sex refers to your physical sex, your genitals. At 18-24 months of life, according to the Merck Manual, a child knows if they are a boy or a girl. At 8 weeks gestation ( inside your mother's womb ) the brain get hardwired by a hormonal influx, to be a boy or girl brain. So you think, or you have heard, that chromosome are the ones responsible for deciding if you are a girl or a boy. Well think again. There are so many different combinations of chromosome patterns, that it makes it very difficult to clearly say, if you are a boy or a girl. Besides this, if the chromosome messenger does not receive the proper message, a faulty hormonal influx takes place. So what does that mean? It means that until the fetus reaches 8 weeks in the womb, it is considered neutral. It is not until androgen is received in the brain, that it differentiates into a boy fetus, or girl fetus. Androgen comes from the Y chromosome. But what happens when your mother has been given medication, introduced to some environmental toxins, or has too much stress? The signals get confused, the brain develops one way, the physical sex ( gonads, reproductive organs, and genitals) develops into another. 65,000 children a year are born with some form of anomaly. The variance is climbing, due to the endocrine disrupting chemicals we see in our environment.

So ever since Jeudo-Christianity believes took over form Magna Mater, in Roman times, we have this notion, this binary system, that believes there are only two genders. So what about the Intersex? What do we do with them. Did you know that Transsexualism is a form of intersex. You see conveniently these religious extremists want you to believe that being different is a sin. Not being educated enough to know there is a neurobiological reasoning behind it. They do not want to believe this, yet they believe in a God they cannot see. Other countries that are not politically governed by Christianity, have done research to prove what I am talking about. Spain, Iran, and France, to name a few, consider Transsexaulism an error of nature. Therefore, they assist Transsexuals with their surgeries and give them civil rights. Our government wants to deviate the worlds problems, you know the one's they have created. By picking on homosexuals, transsexuals, and also telling women what to do with their babies. I think it is time we become educated, be more compassionate, and start thinking for ourselves.
